Ron Agrella, Editor 2/17/2013 1:23:40 AMA winter weather advisory issued this evening by Mayor Menino's office:
Winter Weather Advisory* Issued for February 17, 2013
City Preparing for Potential of High Winds and Substantial Snow
Mayor Menino is reminding residents to be mindful this weekend as another winter weather event approaches the City. National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Boston, with snowfall of 6-8 inches expected in parts of the City. Heaviest snowfall is expected between 4 a.m. and noon Sunday, though the forecast remains fluid. High winds are also expected, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph Sunday. This afternoon, members of the Mayor's Snow Team met to discuss the latest storm related information and response plans for the weekend. There remains a significant amount of uncertainty regarding forecasts, and the Mayor and his team will continue to monitor the latest weather reports throughout the event.
"The City is preparing for the potential of a significant amount of snowfall overnight tonight and into tomorrow,” Mayor Menino said. “Our plows are ready to hit the streets tonight, and we're preparing clean-up operations for Sunday and Monday. I'm asking residents to use common sense, and stay off the roads while snowfall is heaviest tomorrow.”
Boston Public Works crews will be pre-treating roads and readying snow removal equipment across the city’s district yards. Residents with weather-related questions or concerns should call the Mayor’s 24-Hour Hotline at (617) 635-4500, or contact us via Twitter using @NotifyBoston. Residents should also visit www.cityofboston.gov/snow for latest updates and to submit requests and find information online.
Mayor Menino reminds residents of the following:- Use public transportation when possible and avoid driving vehicles on slippery roads to keep roadways clear for plowing equipment and emergency vehicles.
- Property owners are reminded to salt and sand sidewalks, stairs and pedestrian ramps to prevent slippery surfaces.
- Residents are encouraged to shovel out hydrants and catch basins near or abutting their property to assist our public safety agencies and protect against flooding.
- Please check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need help.
- Use caution when walking near buildings that may have falling snow or ice
- Parking rules are strictly enforced during snow events. Do not block driveways, crosswalks or ramps, and do not park within 20 feet of an intersection.
-
At this time, no Snow Emergency or Parking Ban has been declared for the City of Boston. #bosnowby City of Boston via twitter 2/17/2013 1:28:08 AM -
