In today's Globe: A day after Romney, hoping to show empathy with workaday Americans, said he knew what it was like to fear a pink slip, the former Massachusetts governor made another unscripted remark - “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me’’ - that fueled his rivals’ efforts to paint him as wealthy and out of touch. >> Read more -

From Boston Globe op-ed columnist Scot Lehigh, who is in New Hampshire:
Even if Romney wins New Hampshire, the primary battle won't be over
It’s an odd political tableau. Mitt Romney is on the verge of achieving something unprecedented for a non-incumbent Republican candidate: twin victories in Iowa and New Hampshire.
And yet the last few days of the Granite State campaign have raised, rather than allayed, concerns about the GOP frontrunner. -

From The Globe: Mitt Romney mobbed by media, supporters at Manchester polling place
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Mitt Romney came to a polling place near the center of town this morning, and was mobbed by supporters, members of the media, and a few protesters, as voters tried to fight through to cast their ballots.
The crowd outside was boisterous, shouting, “Go, Mitt, Go!” and “Send Obama home!”
At one point, according to those who heard it, someone shouted as Romney held a baby, “Are you going to fire that baby?”
The line was a reference to comment Romney made yesterday, in reference to being able to fire insurance companies, “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.” >> Full story -

Today's voting comes a week after the Iowa caucuses, which Mitt Romney won but Rick Santorum claimed by finishing just 8 votes behind.
Ever since, Romney has been trying to hold onto his big lead in New Hampshire polls, while Santorum and Newt Gingrich have been vying for the deeply conservative vote.
This is also a big day for Jon Huntsman, who has staked his candidacy on a strong showing here. If he could get into second place, he would get a PR boost, but the road ahead is uncertain: His moderate politics won't play well in South Carolina, so look for him to compete next in Florida - if he survives tonight.
Ron Paul continues to be backed by a loyal cadre of supporters, and could finish second or third tonight. Meanwhile, Rick Perry is skipping the state to focus on South Carolina, which votes next, on Jan. 21 -
From The Globe: Newt Gingrich meets voters at polling place
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- If Newt Gingrich expected to meet a lot of voters at the Webster School on the morning of the presidential primary, he was sadly mistaken.
A horde of reporters and about 20 cameras and sound booms engulfed the former House speaker and his wife, Callista, as they stepped out of the campaign bus on Elm Street in an affluent neighborhood near the Hooksett town line. >> Full story -

From The Globe: Jon Huntsman fights off media to visit polling place
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman struggled to speak to voters at a Manchester polling place this afternoon as the police tried, unsuccessfully, to keep throngs of media from crowding around him.
“Who would have imagined anything like this?” Huntsman asked. The crowd chanted, “Go, Jon, go.”
Huntsman, polling in the single digits for months, seemed thrilled with the attention he is finally getting, as polls show him moving into third place in New Hampshire. “We’ve given the state our heart and soul. That’s all you can do,” Huntsman said. “We’ll wait and see what it means tonight.” >> Full story -

Peter Canellos, the Globe's editorial page editor, writes that even though Mitt Romney is in a commanding position to be the Republican presidential nominee, there are still reasons for nervousness among Romney’s supporters, and for fresh hope among his challengers. -
