Helped by a 29-yard pass interference call and onside kick recovery, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw 1-yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter to beat the Cleveland Browns, 27-26, completing another furious comeback.

Julian Edelman caught a 2-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 remaining as the Patriots marched 82 yards in only 1:38 to bring themselves within a touchdown's strike of the win.

Browns kicker Billy Cundiff got one last chance to win it for Cleveland, attempting a 58-yard field goal with one second remaining on the clock. But despite having it lined up correctly, he failed to reach the distance necessary for the Browns to come away with the win.

Just a few minutes prior, Jason Campbell had engineered an 8-play, 80-yard drive, with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter that culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron, helping the Browns take a commanding lead over the Patriots, 26-14.

The touchdown, which looked like it would seal the game, was set up by two key plays, both by receiver Josh Gordon. Gordon took a double reverse and ran for 34 yards and then caught a crucial 19-yard pass on 3rd-and-17.

The Patriots had fought back valiantly in the second half. In one drive, Shane Vereen accounted for 72 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown, to respond to the Browns' offensive barrage.

Stephen Gostkowski followed up with a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Campbell completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Josh Gordon as the Browns went up by 16 points in the third quarter before the Patriots responded.

Gostkowski also made a 33-yard field goal for the Patriots to finally get New England on the board with 1:37 left in the third.

Campbell also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Gary Barnidge at the 10:15 mark in the third quarter.

Cleveland kicker Billy Cundiff nailed two field goals for the Browns in the first half before Barnidge's touchdown catch and run.

Here's Zuri Berry's Week 14 picks for a bit of pregame reading for you. www.boston.com
  • #Patriots inactives: Thompkins, Bolden, Hoomanawanui, Bequette, Beauharnais, plus Cannon & Dobson...Ridley active, Collie too
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 4:54:01 PM
The Patriots will have to do without both of their top outside wide receivers, Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson, after listing Thompkins inactive with a hip injury.

Dobson (foot) has been out since Week 11 against the Carolina Panthers.

Patriots running back Stevan Ridley, who was inactive last week against the Houston Texans, is officially active for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Also active for the Patriots is cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, who had missed practice this week to go to court in Nebraska. He had missed two of the past three games with a knee injury.

Running back Brandon Bolden (knee) will be out of commission for the team as well.

The other Patriots inactives are OT Marcus Cannon (ankle), TE Michael Hoomanawanui (knee), and LB Steve Beauharnais.

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots can clinch the AFC East today with a win against the Cleveland Browns and a little help.

For the Patriots to take their fifth straight division title, they need a Miami Dolphins loss or tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Patriots can clinch a playoff spot with a Baltimore Ravens loss or tie against the Minnesota Vikings.

But it won't come easy. The Browns (4-8) have one of the league's best defenses, holding opponents to an average of 306.8 yards of total offense, good for fourth in the NFL. Cornerback Joe Haden has intercepted four passes in the past four games. Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson has 103 total tackles already. On offense, wide receiver Josh Gordon has inserted himself among the league's elite players with 64 receptions for 1,249 yards and seven touchdowns.

But the Browns have lost their last three games, befuddled by turnover issues and inconsistent play at quarterback. Jason Campbell (concussion) will get the start after Brandon Weeden (concussion) was knocked out last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Patriots will be dealing with their own injuries. Wide receiver Aaron Dobson (foot) is still out, as is tackle Marcus Cannon (ankle). Ten others are listed as questionable.

Here are the details for the game:
    Kickoff: 1 p.m.
    Records: Patriots 9-3; Browns 4-8.
TV, radio: CBS (Don Criqui, Steve Tasker); 98.5 FM The Sports Hub (Bob Socci, Scott Zolak).

So is it or isn't it a trap game?

The Patriots (9-3) host the Browns (4-8) with playoff implications on the line -- for the Patriots, of course -- and a game atmosphere reminiscent of a Week 4 preseason matchup.

The health and status of the team's players afterward may be the only outcome that will actually matter.

So whether or not the Patriots play up -- or down -- to the Browns is quite possibly irrelevant in the grand scheme of the season. But given this team's attitude toward preparation and Bill Belichick's emphasis on mental resilience, we can expect a full throttle effort Sunday.

Here's what we'll be watching in today's game:

    1. Stevan Ridley -- Stevan Ridley is active and will play today's game. So now that we know that, what we'll be watching for is how many touches the talented but fumble prone running back gets Sunday.

    2. Josh Gordon -- The Cleveland wide receiver has had a couple of epic performances this season, including his 10 receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. More than likely, he'll get to face Patriots corner Aqib Talib, who has had his fair share of matchups with the league's elite wide receivers and has won more battles than he has lost. Hopefully, there will be fireworks.

    3. Dolphins-Steelers and Ravens-Vikings -- Because of the playoff implications, we're going to keep a side screen up and follow updates in the Miami Dolphins game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If the Dolphins lose or tie against the Steelers, the Patriots will clinch the AFC East with win today. The Patriots can also clinch a playoff spot if the Baltimore Ravens lose or tie against the Minnesota Vikings. In the latter scenario, a fifth straight AFC East title would have to wait.

    4. How will Jason Campbell look? -- The Browns quarterback is 0-2 all-time against the Patriots, and despite some down years in Oakland, has always been a solid player. Against the Patriots in those two games, he was 46 of 75 passing for 541 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has the ability to make quality throws around the field and with the Patriots secondary nicked up, he has an opportunity to shine once again.

    5. The Patriots run defense -- The team's run defense has been atrocious, partly because recent opponents have dictated a more passing centric defensive scheme. But when you're 31st overall in yards allowed per game (138.2), it's time to start putting the breaks on an obvious weakness. Today, we'll see if the Patriots are interested in this particular area of improvement against a Browns team that manages only 82.3 yards on the ground per game.

Patriots defensive lineman and linebacker Rob Ninkovich is on the cover of the team's game day guide.

Here's what I wrote in my weekly NFL predictions about the Patriots and Browns game:

Browns (+10.5) at Patriots (-10.5) -- Classic trap game? Nah. Patriots coach Bill Belichick respects the Browns organization enough to prepare his team right for a respectable defense that has the ability to limit the Patriots' passing attack. So much so that cracking this double-digit spread will be tough.
    My pick: Browns
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 5:30:10 PM
Stevan Ridley in the starting group for team warmups.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 5:31:16 PM
Dane Fletcher looks like he's going to have a larger role today, based on warmups.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 5:33:24 PM
LeGarrette Blount now appears to be with the starting group. Smokescreen.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 5:54:01 PM
Game time temp is 30 degrees. Winds at 5 MPH.

Two runs, a first down. McGahee with 10 yards.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:05:14 PM
Dont'a Hightower flying to the ball today. Well, well.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:06:08 PM
Jason Campbell pass to Greg Little for 14 yards. Right across the middle of the field. Too open.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:07:21 PM
Sweet pass by Jason Campbell to Jordan Cameron for a 14-yard gain.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:09:06 PM
A Jason Campbell pass to Greg Little was stripped, but his forward progress was ruled stopped. Not a challengeable play.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:09:21 PM
    Definitely iffy on the call.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:10:16 PM
9:18 1st quarter: Browns 3, Patriots 0 -- The Browns marched 47 yards down the field before settling on a 43-yard field goal by Billy Cundiff to take an early lead. Cleveland got away with a fumble by Greg Little after he was stripped on the drive but his forward progress was ruled stopped before he lost the ball. The refs seemed to blow the whistle too quickly.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:13:22 PM
LeGarrette Blount gets the official start for the Patriots at running back.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:14:00 PM
Two passes from Brady to Gronk incomplete.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:14:29 PM
8:32 1st quarter: Browns 3, Patriots 0 -- Tom Brady had a tad bit too much touch on a deep pass to Rob Gronkowski, leading the big tight end too much, on the Patriots' first offensive play of the game. Gronk followed up by a drop and the Patriots went three-and-out on their opening series.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:17:45 PM
Aqib Talib is matched up exclusively on Josh Gordon. He's eyeballing the receiver as soon as he gets out of the huddle.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:19:08 PM
Jason Campbell with a 16-yard pass to Jordan Cameron on a 3rd and 6.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:20:56 PM
Alfonzo Dennard hurt on the field.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:21:54 PM
    Dennard jogs off the field.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:23:55 PM
4:47 1st quarter: Browns 3, Patriots 0 -- Browns QB Jason Campbell steps up and overthrows Greg Little on third down. He had little open, and he's moving well, but he just missed him there. During the play, Alfonzo Dennard returned to the locker room.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:26:54 PM
Blount rush for 6 yards. That was a man's effort. Follows it up with another big run. He's looking good.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:27:48 PM
Ball of Edelman's fingertips on the deep Brady throw.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:28:47 PM
Tom Brady argued his way out of that one. Gets away with intentional grounding and a sack.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:29:25 PM
3:31 1st quarter: Browns 3, Patriots 0 -- Tom Brady threw an interception, caught by Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson. The pass was intended for Josh Boyce.
  • Jackson ruled down by contact at the 39. Gronk was WIDE open on the play, Brady usually doesn't miss him like that
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:31:13 PM
Alfonzo Dennard has a shoulder injury, the team announces. He's questionable to return.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:34:00 PM
Jason Campbell with a big scramble for 21 yards.
  • Zuri Berry 12/8/2013 6:35:06 PM
Screen pass from Campbell to Whittaker should've been a loss. Two missed tackles by the Patriots.
